# How China Rose

A founder's firsthand analysis of how China moved from the world's factory to a leader in quality and innovation, told through the lens of human capital.

This is my third trip to China.

The first time I came, I saw a country working day and night. Factories everywhere, trucks everywhere, and everywhere those things being made that later sold across the world under a “Made in China” label. Back then China was the home of cheap goods. The home of the copy.

This time I saw a different country.

On the roads, electric cars glide past so quietly your ears strain to hear them. Inside the factories there are fewer people and more robots. Drones carry packages across the sky. The towers of Shanghai, the labs of Shenzhen, the workshops of Guangzhou. These are no longer centers of cheap imitation. They are places where some of the best technology in the world is now made.

Ten years ago nobody would have believed it. Today it is simply true. In technology, in engineering, in electric vehicles, even in military strength, China now stands across the table from any major nation. The world’s factory has quietly become the world’s laboratory.

The question is how.

I spent time at Harvard recently. Sitting there, among business owners and professors from every corner of the world, this question kept coming back to me. As a student, I wanted the deep answer. Not the easy one.

## The easy answers, and their excuses

The easy answers are everywhere.

-   They stole the technology.
-   Their labor was cheap.
-   The government threw money at it.
-   They have one and a half billion people.

All four are half true, and full excuses.

You can copy a product through theft. You cannot copy the ability to keep inventing new ones. The Soviet Union copied too, and then it fell apart. Cheap labor was available in many countries, in India, in Bangladesh, across much of Africa. But cheap labor makes you a factory, not an inventor. And China’s labor is not even cheap anymore. Plenty of governments spent money and got nothing back. And population? India has just as many people.

So the real reason is somewhere else. It is not in the politics. It is in the people. In human capital.

## Copying was really an apprenticeship

Here is the thing most people miss. Copying was not the opposite of inventing. Copying was the training. The apprenticeship.

It is a simple idea. You cannot build something new on top of knowledge you have not yet understood. First you understand it. Then you move ahead. China understood first.

When you spend twenty years assembling iPhones for the world, building solar panels for Germany, casting parts for Japanese cars, your millions of engineers and workers are quietly learning how an advanced thing is actually made. The factory floor was their school.

The clearest example is China’s high speed rail. In the beginning China did not have the technology. It signed deals with companies from Japan, Germany and France, on the condition that the technology would be taught along the way. China learned, then built its own trains, and today it runs the largest high speed rail network in the world. And now it sells those same trains to other countries. Yesterday’s apprentice is today’s master. The same story runs through electric cars, batteries and solar. The supply chain that grew while working for the world is what produced companies like BYD and CATL.

## A flood of engineers

Then China did something else. It built a flood of engineers.

In 1999 it threw open the doors of its universities all at once. What had been limited to a few hundred thousand spread to tens of millions. And the heaviest weight fell on science and engineering.

Today China produces close to **2 million** science and engineering graduates every year, while the United States produces under **900,000**. At the very top, at the doctorate level, China will soon graduate around **77,000** STEM PhDs a year against roughly **40,000** in America. And that number is growing **9% a year**, against 3% for the US.

To invent, you first need inventors. China built the count first.

## Sea turtles, the ones who came home

But numbers alone are not enough. The most elegant move is still to come.

China sent its best young people to the best laboratories in America and Europe. This began in 1978 under Deng Xiaoping. For years they did not come back. Life abroad was easier, the pay was better, the research was richer. For China this was a loss of minds.

Then China built a deliberate system. In 2008 it launched the Thousand Talents Plan. Those who returned were given housing, a good salary, their own lab, and above all, respect. Coming home was made not just possible but attractive.

The result? Since the late 1970s more than **6.5 million** people have returned home after studying abroad. The flow that was just 15,000 a year in 2000 reached **580,000** by 2019. Today, of every 100 who study abroad, about **86** come back.

They are called “sea turtles” in Chinese, the turtles that cross the ocean and return to their own shore to lay their eggs.

They did not bring back only degrees. They brought back the knowledge that no book, no copy, no act of espionage can transfer. Years of working inside the best labs in the world. This was the moment a nation that copied became a nation that invents. Companies like Baidu were built by these returnees. One study found that the young people who came back produced **27% more** research than the ones who stayed abroad.

## Money behind the people

Talented people leave if they are not kept busy and prosperous. China solved that too. It put money behind its people.

In 2010 China’s spending on research was only **47%** of America’s. By 2023 it was **95%**. And in 2025 that spending crossed **2.8% of GDP** for the first time, passing the average of the rich nations. In money, that is around **$550 billion**.

And now China is spending more not only on applied research but on basic science. The result is visible. Of the ten institutions in the world that published the most research, seven are Chinese.

## One place, one direction

Two more things made everything faster.

First, China gathered its talent in one place. Cities like Shenzhen, where the supply chain, the engineers and the capital all sit together. There a prototype that takes a month to build elsewhere is ready in a week. When capable people are in one place, speed takes care of itself.

Second, the government aimed all that power at chosen fields. Electric cars, batteries, solar, drones, 5G, and now AI. Today BYD is the largest maker of electric vehicles in the world, CATL the largest maker of batteries, DJI makes most of the world’s drones, Huawei led the world in 5G, and recently a Chinese AI called DeepSeek stunned everyone. Today more than one in every two new cars sold in China is electric.

## The wall that still stands

This story is not complete, and I have to say this honestly too.

At the very top, at the hardest level, a wall still stands. In the most advanced computer chips and in basic science, China is still behind.

> Our talent is large in number, but not yet strong enough.

A phone can be copied. The machine that makes the chip cannot be copied so easily, because that knowledge is held very tightly in very few hands. This is exactly where the road of copying comes to a stop.

## The real lesson

So what is the real lesson?

Invention is not bought. It is built. Slowly. Over twenty or twenty five years. First you work for others and you learn. Then you call your learned people home. Then you put money behind them. Then you give them a direction. And then you temper them in fierce competition until they turn to gold. That is the whole story.

And this is what I want to say to my own people. A nation is also like a person. It can decide that it wants to climb. Its path is not a mountain, and not a miracle. It is one simple thing. Investment in its own people. Education, skill, and then patience. China made this decision twenty five years ago. Today the world calls it invention.

We have people too. Intelligent, hardworking, young. What is missing is intent and patience, not numbers.

A few days ago a story moved the whole world. Vozinha, the forty year old goalkeeper of Cape Verde, who stood like a wall against a team like Spain at the World Cup. He had worked for years in small, unknown clubs. The world discovered him in a single night.

China’s story is the same. It worked quietly for twenty five years, and the world called it invention within a single decade.

The real story is always the years when no one was watching.
